Allantoin is a multitasking powerhouse ingredient. Allantoin acts as an emollient that helps to develop a protective film over skin cells, which leads to less water loss. Allantoin also acts as a keratinolytic, which softens the keratin protein found in the outer layer of the skin, allowing the skin to hold onto water better. This makes skin plumper, more supple and extremely hydrated. Keratinolytics also promote shedding of the skin which results in visibly smoother skin and improved overall texture.

For everything that allantoin does do — there are actually little to no adverse side effects. We like to think of allantoin as a low-risk, high-reward superstar additive for any formula!

The roots of the Comfrey plant (Symphytum Officinale), which is native to the United States and Europe, contain a powerful substance called Allantoin. Allantoin is found within the root mucilage that the comfrey produces, and accelerates new skin cell growth while also being a natural anti-inflammatory agent.
